Svaneti is a historical region in northwest Georgia, bordering Russia. Sitting in the southern Greater Caucasus mountain range, it’s characterized by snowcapped peaks and deep gorges. The medieval villages of Upper Svaneti are dotted with koshki, defensive stone structures built from the 9th century onwards.
This tour is an invitation to step away from the digital clutter, offering a escape into Georgia’s breathtaking wilds. From the remote village of Chuberi to the historic heights of Ushguli, you’ll traverse valleys, ascend stark mountain ridges, and gallop across landscapes that reflect ancient civilizations.

The journey begins with a transfer to Chuberi, nestled in the Nenskra Valley, this remote village is a gateway to the wild beauty of Svaneti. Nestled on the banks of the Nenskra river, Chuberi is surrounded by dense forests and towering mountains, setting the scene for the adventure ahead.
Horseback expedition begins with setting off on an adventure from Chuberi village through the ascend of Utviri pass, offering early glimpses of the Caucasus’ grandeur. The trail to Zemo Marghi leads through alpine meadows and past ancient stone towers – the remains of Svaneti’s medieval defense system.
Destination: Village Nakra, situated in a valley shadowed by the imposing peaks, offers a picturesque conclusion to the day’s ride, with its traditional Svan houses and the nearby Nakra river.

Kichkhuldashi is a memorable place because it’s only one family living in the village. They completely supply themselves and the only products that they buy are sugar and flour. Journey involves crossing the rugged terrains of Mountain Utviri, offering breathtaking views of the Svaneti Range. This segment highlights the region’s dramatic contrasts—from valleys to stark mountain ridges.
Path: Riding from Kichkhuldashi to Etseri takes participants through landscapes dotted with small hamlets and pastoral scenes, reflecting the daily lives of the Svans against the backdrop of the Caucasus mountains. Etseri village is known for its scenic beauty and offers panoramic views that stretch across the valley to the towering peaks beyond, a perfect setting for reflection and relaxation.
Ascent: The climb to Meziri Mountain is both a physical and metaphorical highlight, providing unparalleled vistas of the Svaneti region’s heart.
Becho: Descending into Becho, riders are greeted by the majestic Ushba mountain, often referred to as the “Matterhorn of the Caucasus” for its striking appearance and challenging climbs.
Journey: The path from Becho to Mestia unfolds through a landscape punctuated with medieval watchtowers, churches, and villages that tell the story of Svaneti’s rich history and cultural heritage.
Mestia: The regional capital, Mestia, is a treasure trove of Georgian history, with its museums, ancient churches, and Svan towers, offering insights into the enduring legacy of the Svan people.
Exploration: Departing Mestia, the trail to Zabeshi skirts along riverbanks and through forests, revealing the natural beauty that has shaped the region’s history and culture.
Zabeshi: A small village that provides a tranquil setting for overnight rest, with clear views of the surrounding mountains and a chance to engage with local traditions.
Ride from Zabeshi to Adishi. Known for its isolation and stunning natural setting, Adishi offers an intimate experience of Svaneti’s timeless culture, surrounded by high peaks and ancient traditions.
Trek: From Adishi, the route to Iprali traverses remote areas, providing a sense of the vastness and unspoiled beauty of the Georgian wilderness.
Iprali: A village that represents the harmony of human settlement and nature, offering a peaceful retreat and a connection to the rugged landscape.
Summit: The final leg to Ushguli is a crescendo, bringing riders to the highest inhabited village in Europe, under the shadow of Shkhara, Georgia’s highest peak. Ushguli’s UNESCO World Heritage status underscores its cultural and historical significance.
Return to Mestia: A 4WD transfer back to Mestia allows for reflection on the journey, the landscapes traversed, and the people encountered, closing the circle of this remarkable tour.
